Perhaps
our easiest choice thus far. Zak. Always found wearing a
smile, quick to offer assistance, and seldom found not sharing his
knowledge of the martial arts with his fellow students. Zak is
the martial arts student that makes teaching a joy, and he is
already developing into a very good teacher himself.
Always attentive, he is quick to learn and you can tell by his
enthusiasm and effort that he really enjoys what he's doing.
Zak is well on his way to his green belt, but judging by his
commitment and his natural talent, achieving that will only be one
of many milestones throughout his martial arts training.
The saying goes "practice makes perfect", and if we all practiced to
be a bit more like Zak, the world would be a more perfect place.
Zak, thank you for setting a good example for the other
students to follow. Although we know you from only what we
observe inside the Dojo, it's easy to see that you carry yourself
the same in your everyday life. Keep smiling!.

Simply
translated, "Sensei" means teacher or instructor.
There has been no other in my lifetime, nor will there ever
be again, who has taught me so much.
When he lost his wife, my mother, over eighteen
years ago, he lost a big piece of himself. He never
remarried, or even dated, and shed tears for her until the
very end. The biggest thing he taught me were in his
last years... how to be a good husband and an even better
father. He must of told me a hundred times since Chase
was born seven years ago that "This is the time of my life".
Many times, with tears in his eyes, he told me how proud my
mother would have been of me, and said as he looked back on
his life, his time with us when we were children were by far
the most joyous days of his life.
I could go on and on, but I will summarize. My
love for children stems directly from him and my mother.
He was my mentor, my coach, my father, my "sensei" and most
importantly, my friend. I hope it shows on the dojo
floor just how much I enjoy teaching and bringing smiles to
children's faces.
Thanks Dad, for the love you showed me, and everything
you taught me, and most of all thank you for making me stop
taking the most important things in life for granted,
friends and family.
Thank You
to all who expressed their sympathies. I am deeply
thankful.

It’s finally here, Saturday May 8th, the first ever UWMA tournament
for sparring and Kata. Congratulations to those who are attending
and we look forward to the next one for those who did not
participate this time.
We will have all the
division postings in the Dojo shortly and we will make sure all
students who are participating receive rules and regulations for the
tournament.
Please remember that
this is a tournament for the students and not the parents, as we
encourage cheering your son or daughter during normal class time, we
must be mindful of the feelings of others. Good sportsmanship will
be enforced during the tournament, and anyone who does not practice
this will be disqualified from their division. It is not the thrill
of winning we encourage but the sprit of competition and
self-challenge, that's what truly makes us winners. First place is
great and you should be proud, but remember we all start out
somewhere, even Master Sanchez has lost matches in his past.
NOTE: All Lil Dragon, 9-12
year old, Adult Karate and Cardio classes will be canceled the day of the
tournament.
If you are not in the
tournament and you wish to watch, we would love to see you there.
All trophies and awards will be given out during the next karate
class for that age group. Lil Dragons and 9-12 year olds on Monday,
May 10th, and the Adults on Tuesday, May 11th. If you can’t make
your normal class we will give the trophies out at the next class
you attend. No trophies will be handed out the day of the
tournament due to the strict time frames of the divisions.
